My first attempt at a victorian corset. I am so proud of the way it came out. Wasn't nearly as difficult as I was anticipating. This shot is of me wearing it, but I have submitted other views including the inside to demonstrate the casings, and of the back to demonstrate the laces, so check out my gallery if you're interested in seeing the details
Pattern: Butterick #B4254.
Time taken: approximately 17 hours, give or take.
Fabric: Dark purple cotton twill for the outside, heavy canvas for interfacing, and cotton muslin as lining.
Trim: Black velvet ribbon accenting the seams, black synthetic lace over cotton bias tape for the edges, black cotton cord for lacing.
Hardware: 24 spring steel bones of varying lengths, steel 5 stud busk and 32 nickel plated #00 size grommets.
First of all, I altered the pattern somewhat, mostly for size (made it quite a bit smaller). I also chose to make my bones invisible from the outside, by making my casings between the interfacing and lining layers, then sewing those to my outer layer, rather than sewing all the layers together and creating casings on the inside using ribbon as the pattern suggested. Before doing this I added the black ribbon trim to my visible seams, and added the lace to cover my terrible bias tape efforts. I did a significant amount of research in preparation for this project, and I would love to hear your feedback. As I mentioned, this is merely the first of what I hope will be many more, so any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.
Mmm, while I don't actually have any idea what (who?) gosu rori is, the reason it took 17 hours is because I only had 70 mins a day to work on it at school. It took two weeks and a bit of my spare time, so I figure 17 hours.

Very nice work, especially if this is your first corset.
My only suggestion is that to prevent the bunching from occuring at the bottom you have to have the bones and busk extend right to the edges, this in turn means that you have to put the edging on by hand, but it can be worth it just to prevent the wrinkle from forming. Congrats again

I know well the wrinkle you're talking about. I believe it also may be more pronounced because the bones aren't attached to the outer layer at all, so the shell tends to wrinkle while the inside is fine. Thanks for the tip though, I think the edging will go on by hand for my next one considering how the bias tape turned out on this one done by machine (not perfectly, although it's hidden by lace) Thanks so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
